AI micro-drama in 2026: the numbers

Quick answer: Three numbers frame it. Short-drama apps passed 850 million downloads worldwide in the first quarter of 2026, up 140% on a year earlier, and took in about US$750 million in in-app purchases (Sensor Tower). Outside China, AI-made titles went from about 3% of vertical-drama releases in the first quarter to about two-thirds in the third (Owl & Co, as reported on 20 October). In China the regulator counted 430,000 micro-dramas released between January and August, more than 90% of them made with AI. The three sources count different things in different places, so read them side by side, not as one curve. Numbers checked on 26 October 2026.

The Owl & Co figures reach us through press coverage; we have not read the full report. The Chinese figures are the regulator’s own, as stated at the briefing.

How to read them

  • Downloads are not revenue. India is 22% of downloads; Sensor Tower names the United States as the revenue leader. Where people install an app and where they pay for it are different maps.
  • The revenue figure is in-app purchases only. The report does not say whether it is gross or net, which stores it covers, or whether China is included, so it is not comparable to a box-office number. Downloads are estimates for the App Store and Google Play and leave out pre-installs, re-downloads and third-party Android stores.
  • An AI share of releases is a share of titles, not of viewing. Two-thirds of new releases made with AI says how most new titles are produced. It does not say how many people watch them or for how long.
  • Nobody defines “made with AI”. The pages we read do not say whether a fully generated series and a live-action one with AI-assisted editing count the same. Treat the percentages as indications, not as a measurement.

China, counted separately

China is reported on its own: the regulator’s figures cover every micro-drama released there, and the global app figures do not say whether China is included. At the State Council Information Office briefing the regulator gave these numbers:

  • 430,000 micro-dramas released from January to August 2026, 13 times the whole of 2025, with AI-made titles above 90%.
  • More than 800 million users; a market above 100 billion yuan in 2025.
  • 68,000 non-compliant micro-dramas taken down and more than 1,200 accounts dealt with, over 90% of the content handled coming from AI-made titles.
  • The micro-drama development and management measures (微短剧发展管理办法) took effect on 1 September 2026; a micro-drama made with AI has to carry a prominent notice on each episode, and platforms must uphold portrait and voice authorisation.
  • The stated line is that AI is a tool and people remain the authors. The regulator also said live-action dramas are the main force for high-quality work and that it will support a live-action section on platforms.

Another Chinese industry body’s quarterly counts, reported second-hand, are 128,000 titles released in the first quarter (122,000 of them AI-made) and 239,000 in the second (153,000 AI-made). The two quarters add up to 367,000 against the regulator’s 430,000 for eight months, and the second-quarter AI share works out at about 64% by our arithmetic, so the two sets do not obviously fit together. Neither publishes how it counts. Use the regulator’s figures for the January–August total and do not splice the two. Disclosure rules in other markets are in the compliance checklist.

What it means if you make one

This is our reading, not something the sources say.

  • AI-made is now the normal way to make a micro-drama, so it is not the pitch. What a viewer notices is the story and whether the people look the same from one shot to the next. Keeping characters consistent.
  • Volume is enormous. A title that has to share a feed with hundreds of thousands of others needs its reason to keep watching in the first seconds. Hooks and cliffhangers.
  • The audience is not where the money is. Most downloads are in Southeast Asia, Latin America and India; the United States leads revenue. Choose the dialogue language and region with that in mind: AI short drama in 15 languages.

What these numbers do not tell you

  • No source here gives watch time or the share of viewing that goes to AI-made titles.
  • The latest Sensor Tower quarter we found is Q1 2026; nothing for the second or third quarter yet.
  • The Owl & Co figures come from a press summary, and the global and Chinese counts use different rules.
