How to Choose an AI Video Generator

Quick answer: AI video generators differ less in how good one clip looks than in what happens around the clip. Seven questions sort them out: how long a finished video can be, whether characters stay the same, whether sound is generated with the picture, which formats and quality you get, whether you can fix one shot, what you pay and when you learn the price, and what you can do with the file. Each has a ten-minute test below. SceneMixer’s answer to each is stated plainly, so you can hold any tool, ours included, to the same seven questions.

Try it: write the same three-shot scene, two named characters in one room, into every generator you are considering. Compare the second and third shots against the first, not the first against the others.

1. How long can a finished video be?

Ask for the longest finished video, not the longest clip. Most models make a clip of a few seconds to half a minute. A longer video is clips joined, so the real question is what holds the joined clips together (question 2). SceneMixer makes segments of 15 or 30 seconds and joins them into an episode; a series is as long as the script. 15 or 30 second segments.

2. Do the characters stay the same?

This is the question that separates tools most. Test it: generate three shots with the same two people and check the faces, the clothes and the room in shots 2 and 3. SceneMixer reads the script once into a cast, locations and props that are fixed before any video is made, and every shot uses them. Why a whole series stays consistent.

3. Is the sound made with the picture?

Some tools make silent clips and leave voices to a second tool. Check whether the lines you write are spoken in the video, by which voice, and in which languages. In SceneMixer dialogue is spoken inside the video itself, one voice per character, in any of 15 languages, and each episode is scored for you. Dialogue and sound in one generation.

4. What formats and quality do you get?

Look for vertical and landscape, and the actual resolution of the file you download, not the best resolution on the pricing page. SceneMixer makes 9:16 or 16:9, from 480P up to 1080P, with a 2K tier on some models. Which quality tier.

5. Can you fix one shot?

Every tool makes a bad shot sometimes. What matters is the cost of fixing it: does it mean generating the whole video again? In SceneMixer you edit the shot’s text, which is free, and regenerate that one segment; the earlier take is kept. Fixing one shot without redoing everything.

6. What do you pay, and when do you find out?

Check the unit (per second, per clip, per credit), whether the price is shown before you press the button, and what a failed attempt costs. SceneMixer charges per second, shows the price on the button, and refunds a segment that fails. On the default tier video is 10 credits a second, and a 60-second episode is about 660 credits before retakes. Where credits go in one episode.

7. What can you do with the file?

Check whether you can download the original-quality file, whether a badge or watermark is added and who can remove it, and what a shared link carries. In SceneMixer a free account’s videos carry a small badge, members can turn it off, and a shared link always carries it. AI video without a watermark.

A ten-minute test for any tool

  1. Write a three-shot scene with two named characters in one room, and one line of dialogue.
  2. Generate it. Open shots 2 and 3 and compare them with shot 1: same faces, same clothes, same room?
  3. Is the line spoken in the video, in the voice and language you wanted?
  4. Change one line in shot 2 and make only that shot again. Did the others stay as they were, and what did it cost?
  5. Download the file. What size, what shape, what mark in the corner?

Red flags

  • A price you only learn after you press the button.
  • “Unlimited” with no mention of what limits the speed or the quality. Why unlimited AI video plans disappeared.
  • Samples that are all single clips of a few seconds, with no finished episode.
  • No way to see the cast or the script before the video is made.

  4. Storyboard: generate episode 1 first (free on your first drama) and read it before you render anything. One place per segment.

FAQ

How do I choose an AI video generator?

Ask seven questions: length of a finished video, whether characters stay the same, sound, formats and quality, fixing one shot, price and when you learn it, and what you can do with the file.

Which AI video generator is best?

That depends on what you are making. This page does not rank tools; it gives you the questions and a ten-minute test to compare any of them, ours included.

How do I test whether characters stay the same?

Generate three shots with the same two named characters in one room and compare shots 2 and 3 against shot 1: faces, clothes and room.

Why does the price unit matter?

Per second, per clip and per credit are not comparable until you know what a finished minute costs, including failed attempts and retakes.

Do AI video generators add a watermark?

Many add a mark on free plans. In SceneMixer a small AI badge is on by default for free accounts, members can turn it off and shared links always carry it.

Can I fix one shot without regenerating the whole video?

In SceneMixer, yes: edit the shot's text and regenerate that one segment. Check this in any tool you try.

What is a good first project to test with?

A one-minute scene with two named characters, one room and one line of dialogue. It exposes consistency, sound and price in ten minutes.

Does SceneMixer pass all seven?

The table above says what it does on each. The ten-minute test is the way to check that for yourself.
