Do AI movies make money?

Where money can come from
- Platform ad share. On YouTube that is the Partner Program (below). Other platforms have their own programs and terms; check their own pages, which we have not summarised here.
- Clients. Short ad spots, trailers, training videos and explainers made for someone else. What to charge for an AI video project · AI ad video generator.
- Pitching. A trailer or pilot to show a series before it exists. A pilot or pitch trailer.
- Festivals and sales. Whoever you sell to or submit to sets its own rules for AI-assisted work. A short film for a festival.
YouTube's published thresholds
YouTube's Partner Program overview says a channel can become eligible with either of two routes: 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 qualified watch hours in the last 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. It also says you need to follow the channel monetization policies, have no active Community Guidelines strikes, have 2-Step Verification on, and have an AdSense for YouTube account linked. The page says a decision comes after review, “typically in about 1 month”. Its first lines add that updates to the Partner Program start on February 1, 2027, with new terms to accept in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027. What 4,000 watch hours means in views
4,000 hours is 240,000 minutes. How many views that takes depends on how much of each video people watch, on average:
| Average minutes watched per view | Views for 4,000 hours |
|---|---|
| 1 | 240,000 |
| 2 | 120,000 |
| 3 | 80,000 |
| 5 | 48,000 |
| 10 | 24,000 |
That is arithmetic, not a forecast. A three-minute film that people watch to the end needs about 80,000 views for the watch-hours route, and no tool can promise them. The watch hours also have to be public and “qualified” in YouTube's sense, and the page notes that watch hours from Shorts views in the Shorts feed don't count towards the 4,000.
What the monetization policy says about the kind of video that earns
YouTube's monetization policies say content should be original and authentic. Under generic or repetitive content they list as allowed “a series following a set of characters across episodes” where each video has a distinct storyline, focus or concept, and “using AI to visualize a unique character and narrative you invented”. Among what's not allowed: “Videos where characters are put in the same situation over and over again with the same outcome”, and AI-generated content made with “generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production”. Questions to put to your own channel, not a ruling on it: is each episode a different story? Did you write the characters and the plot? Would two episodes be hard to tell apart? What a finished minute costs to make
Video is 10 credits a second on the default tier (about $0.06 a second at the lowest credit price), and joining an episode is 1 credit a second. The worked example in the cost guide is ten 90-second episodes, fifteen minutes of runtime, from a 30,000-character novel: about 10,026 credits, about $62 at the lowest credit price. Retakes are extra, so budget for them. What a micro-drama costs · Spend fewer credits · AI video cost calculator.
What we will not tell you
We will not quote typical earnings, say how fast a channel grows, or call a niche ‘worth it’. We do not have those numbers for AI films, and a made-up one would be a promise. The market page has what we do have about the short-drama business. AI micro-drama market data.
Make it in SceneMixer, start to finish
- Script: paste your own on Upload Script, or write the brief above in AI Create and let it draft the episodes.
- Step 1: Type Short Drama; Scene Style Neon Nights, Urban Opulence; Costume Style Streetwear, Smart Casual; Visual Style Digital HD, Shot on Film; Target Region; dialogue language; 9:16 Portrait. Then read the script.
- Step 2: Make each episode its own story, with the same few people; the policy's own example is a series of distinct storylines. The first 15 setup images on an account are free.
- Storyboard: generate episode 1 first (free on your first drama) and read it before you render anything. One place per segment.
- Video: render on the default tier at 10 credits a second, fix single shots instead of whole episodes, then put the episode together and post.
