“This segment may not have been read correctly”: what the prompt means and how to fix it

Wrote the dialogue differently from the standard shape? How to write a line, and what Save tidies up.
When the prompt appears
Only on the website’s episode editor, and only when you press Generate on a segment that is yours: one you inserted, or one whose text has been edited since it was written (by hand or with AI edit, so it has a text history). A segment as first written by the site is not checked, and neither is the free preview.
The box has two choices: Cancel keeps you on the segment so you can fix it, Generate anyway sends it as it is. Nothing is charged until you confirm, and a charge, if any, is the normal price on the button. The check is a warning, not a lock: if you meant the text to look that way, confirm it.
In Generate all, a segment that would trigger the box is not asked about one by one — it is skipped, and the list says Segment N was skipped: it may not have been read correctly. Fix it and generate that segment on its own. Generate all segments at once.
The four reasons it can list
| What the box says | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| It isn’t split into shots in the [Shot 1] 3s: format, so the system can’t find the shots and will send the whole text to the video model as it is. | The segment has no numbered shots with seconds, so there is nothing to time, cast or voice. | Put every shot on its own line starting [Shot 1] 3s:, [Shot 2] 4s: and so on, or restore the earlier version from History. |
| In shot N, a line with a voice tag wasn’t recognized as dialogue, so it may not be spoken. | The voice chip is there but the line around it is not in a shape the reading accepts, for example the colon is missing or the speaker chip is not a character chip. | Rewrite it as @Name (how): words. (voice: Name) and press Save, which tidies the common casual ways of writing a line. |
| In shot N, text written as “Name: line” wasn’t recognized as dialogue (no voice tag), so it may not be spoken, or may be spoken by the wrong person. | It looks like a line, but without a voice chip it is only text in the picture description. | Add the voice chip after the words: type @, open the Voice tab, pick the same character. |
| The line “…” isn’t used by any shot, so it won’t be spoken in the video. | The segment still lists the line, but no shot carries it any more, usually because you cut the shot or moved the words. | Put the line back inside the shot where it is spoken, or delete it if you no longer want it said. |
More than one reason can appear in the same box. The shot numbers in the box are the numbers you see in the text, so you can go straight to them.
Fixing it, step by step
- Press Cancel in the box. You are back on the segment.
- Press Edit and read the text from the top. Every shot starts with its number and seconds; every spoken line sits inside its shot.
- Fix what the box listed. For lines, use the @ button: Cast tab for who speaks, Voice tab after the words.
- Press Save. Read the message that appears — Save also tidies casual dialogue into the standard shape and tells you which shots it touched.
- Press Generate again. If the box comes back with fewer reasons, work through the rest; if it does not come back, the segment reads cleanly.
Editing the text is free; only the video is charged. If you pasted a whole screenplay scene into a segment, split it into shots first — how to write one shot · what you can change in the storyboard.
Is it safe to press Generate anyway?
Sometimes. If the first reason (no shots) is the only one and you wrote the segment as one flowing paragraph on purpose, the video model gets your paragraph as written and may still do something good. But the segment will not be timed shot by shot, and no line in it will be given a voice by the site. If the reason is about dialogue, the likely result is a silent character or the wrong voice, and the clip is charged either way.
A cheap way to decide: fix the text and generate at a low-cost tier first. Checklist before you generate videos · Spend fewer credits.
Not the same as the amber note after Save
After you save a hand edit, an amber note can appear under the text about links or references that went missing in a copy and paste. That is about what you saved. The prompt on this page is about whether the text can be read at the moment you generate. They are separate checks. Amber notes after you save · When the video says a line you never wrote.
FAQ
Why did SceneMixer ask me to check my segment before generating?
You edited the segment's text, and the check found something it cannot read as shots or spoken lines. The box lists what and where; it is a warning, not a block.
Am I charged if I press Cancel?
No. Nothing is charged until you confirm Generate anyway or generate again after fixing.
Does the check change my text?
No. It only reads it. Save is the step that tidies dialogue into the standard shape.
Why was a segment skipped in Generate all?
Generate all skips a segment that would show this box, and says so. Fix it and generate that segment on its own.
What does a line with a voice tag not recognized mean?
The voice chip is present but the line is not in a shape the reading accepts, often a missing colon or a speaker that is plain text rather than a character chip. Rewrite it and press Save.
Do I need a voice chip on every line?
Yes. A line without one is not treated as dialogue, so it may not be spoken or may be spoken by the wrong person.
Will the check appear for segments the site wrote?
Only after they are changed by hand or with AI edit, or if you inserted the segment yourself. A segment as first written is not checked.
Can I turn the check off?
No. You can always confirm Generate anyway.
Read it the way the system will.
Open a segment, check that every shot has its number and every line its voice, then generate.
