A Sora Alternative for AI Drama Series, After the Shutdown

Updated October 13, 2026

Quick answer: OpenAI discontinued the Sora web and app experiences on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. If you used Sora to tell stories, SceneMixer covers that work as a pipeline: from a script, a novel or one sentence it produces the cast, an episode outline, a storyboard per episode and the video segment by segment, with characters performing their lines on screen in 15 languages. Clips you exported from Sora can also be read by Video Remake and rebuilt with your own cast.

What happened to Sora

OpenAI's help center says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, the API on September 24, 2026, and that data is permanently deleted after any final export window1. There is no Sora to switch back to, so the question is what to use for the same work.

Moving a story over

  1. Start from the story, not the clip. Paste or upload the script, or describe the premise in one sentence.
  2. Set the project in step 1: Type (Short Drama, TV Series or Film), aspect ratio, dialogue language and target region.
  3. Reuse character art you own. On a paid plan, upload it in place of a generated sheet; otherwise generate sheets — the first 15 on an account are free.
  4. Draft cheaply, finish the keepers. Generate at the lowest tier, then regenerate only the segments that will be seen most at a higher resolution. Draft at 480P, finish at 1080P.
A SceneMixer storyboard segment: location, time and weather fields, then numbered shots with durations, asset chips and spoken lines
One storyboard segment: where and when, then numbered shots with durations, the cast in each shot and the spoken lines. Edit the text, then regenerate just that segment.

Frequently asked questions

When did Sora shut down?

OpenAI's help center says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026.

Can I still get my Sora videos?

OpenAI said content could be exported from sora.chatgpt.com/sunset and that data is permanently deleted after any final export window. Check OpenAI's help center for what is still possible.

Can SceneMixer reuse my exported Sora clips?

Video Remake can read a clip of up to 150 seconds — its cuts, people, actions and lines — and rebuild it with characters from your own sheets. The clip itself is never handed to the video model. Remake a video with AI.

Is SceneMixer a Sora alternative for stories?

For stories told in episodes with a fixed cast and spoken dialogue, yes: that is the whole pipeline SceneMixer runs. If you mainly made single clips, a general video generator may suit you better; see the other pages in this section.

How much does SceneMixer cost?

Credit packs start at $1.49, the Pro plan is $7.99 a month, and video starts at about $0.06 a second at 480P at the lowest credit price. New accounts get 50 free credits.
